Material used to create those carvings are not acquired from animals killed specifically for this porpose. They are the by-products of that harvest for food and traditional clothing.
Baleen is taken only from dead bowhead whales. Notice that until 2005 when one bowhead was allowed to be harvested, huntil had been prohibited.
By using antler, bones, tusk and baleen, Inuit artits are recycling what would otherwise be wasted material.
